About the Age Calculator

This calculator tells you your exact age in years, months, and days — plus total days lived and a countdown to your next birthday. We built it because most online age calculators give you a single number and call it done. We wanted something that actually answers the questions people come here with: how many days old am I? or how long until I turn 30?

Everything runs locally in your browser. No data is sent anywhere, and no account is required. Just enter a date and get your answer instantly.

How Age is Calculated

Age is counted in completed years. A person born on March 15, 2000 turns 25 on March 15, 2025 — not on March 14 or 16. The calculator handles edge cases correctly, including people born on February 29 (leap day birthdays count as March 1 in non-leap years for the purpose of determining if the birthday has passed).

For the day count, we sum every calendar day from your birth date to today, including all leap years that fall in between. This is why someone who turns 25 today might be anywhere from 9,131 to 9,135 days old depending on how many February 29ths appeared in their lifetime.

Common Reasons People Use This

We see this calculator used in a few common situations. People calculating their child's exact age in months for a paediatrician visit — because "almost two and a half" isn't quite specific enough. Couples figuring out how many days they've been together for an anniversary milestone. Students checking whether they qualify for an age-restricted scholarship or program. And honestly, a lot of people just get curious one day and wonder: how many days have I actually been alive?

My favourite use is checking historical ages — you can enter Abraham Lincoln's birthday (February 12, 1809) and see exactly how old he was when he was elected, or when he was assassinated. It makes history feel a bit more tangible.

Age Milestones Worth Knowing

  • 10,000 days old — that's around age 27 years and 4 months. Some people throw a small celebration for this one.
  • 1 billion seconds old — happens at approximately 31 years, 8 months, and 8 days. Genuinely rare to hit it and notice.
  • Average US lifespan — roughly 78–79 years, or about 28,500 days. Puts things in perspective.
  • The oldest verified human — Jeanne Calment of France, who lived 122 years and 164 days (born 1875, died 1997).

Age in Different Cultures

In East Asian age-reckoning traditions (historically used in Korea, China, and Japan), a person is considered 1 year old at birth and gains a year on Lunar New Year's Day rather than their birthday. A baby born in late December could technically be considered 2 years old just a few weeks later. South Korea officially switched to the international standard in 2023, so this is becoming less common in practice — but if you're dealing with documents from older Korean relatives, it's worth knowing the difference. Our calculator always uses the Western/international standard: age 0 at birth, incrementing on each birthday.

Age for Legal and Administrative Purposes

Legal age is almost always calculated using the same method as this calculator — counting completed years from the date of birth. A few thresholds that commonly come up: 13 for social media consent under COPPA in the US; 18 for voting, signing contracts, and most financial accounts; 21 for alcohol purchase in the US; 25 for car rentals without a young driver surcharge; 59½ for penalty-free IRA withdrawals; and 65 for Medicare eligibility. If you're checking a specific legal threshold, the exact local law always takes precedence over a general calculator.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many days old am I?+
Enter your birthday above and the calculator will tell you exactly how many days you have been alive, accounting for all leap years. For reference, 10,000 days is about 27 years and 4 months — a milestone some people celebrate!
What if I was born on February 29?+
Leap day birthdays (February 29) only occur every 4 years. In non-leap years, the birthday is typically observed on March 1 for most legal and administrative purposes, though some people celebrate on February 28. The calculator uses March 1 as the equivalent date in non-leap years.
Can I calculate someone else's age?+
Yes — just enter their date of birth. The calculator works for any birth date from the past. It can also calculate historical ages (e.g. how old was Abraham Lincoln when he was elected president — enter his birth date of February 12, 1809).
What is the minimum age to use various services?+
Common minimum age thresholds: 13 for most social media platforms (COPPA in the US), 16 for driving learner's permits in many states, 18 for voting and most legal contracts, 21 for alcohol in the US, 25 for car rentals without a surcharge, 65 for full Social Security benefits (for many birth years).
