How to Calculate Percentages

Finding X% of a Number

Formula: Result = (Percentage ÷ 100) × Number
Example: 15% of 200 = (15 ÷ 100) × 200 = 30

Calculating Percentage Change

Formula: % Change = ((New − Old) ÷ Old) × 100
Example: Price goes from $80 to $100: ((100 − 80) ÷ 80) × 100 = 25% increase

Finding What Percent X is of Y

Formula: % = (X ÷ Y) × 100
Example: 25 out of 200: (25 ÷ 200) × 100 = 12.5%

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate a percentage increase?+
Subtract the original value from the new value, divide by the original value, then multiply by 100. Example: salary goes from $50,000 to $55,000: (55,000 − 50,000) ÷ 50,000 × 100 = 10% increase. Use the "% Change" tab above to calculate this instantly.
What is percentage points vs percent?+
These are often confused. If interest rates go from 2% to 3%, that is a 1 percentage point increase, but a 50% relative increase. "Percentage points" describes an absolute difference between two percentages. "Percent change" describes a relative change. The distinction matters a lot in finance and statistics.
How do I find the original price before a discount?+
Divide the sale price by (1 − discount rate). Example: item costs $75 after a 25% discount: 75 ÷ (1 − 0.25) = 75 ÷ 0.75 = $100 original price. Or use our Discount Calculator which handles this directly.
How do I calculate percentage of a total in Excel?+
In Excel, use: =A1/B1 and format the cell as percentage. Or =A1/B1*100 to get the number directly. For percentage change: =(B1-A1)/A1*100. Excel's percentage formatting multiplies by 100 automatically, so be careful about double-multiplication when entering formulas.
